Pregnancy invites various health problems. Being pregnant is a beautiful experience. You are giving birth to a new life. Experience beautiful changes in your mind and body. Feel a heartbeat that can’t be expressed in words.
But many pregnant women face pain and other health issues during this stage. They mostly suffer from back pain, labor pain, stomach pain, irregular bowel, and mood swings. It also causes nausea or vomiting.
But the main question arises can we take painkillers during pregnancy or is it safe to use painkillers in pregnancy. Let’s answer it!
Are common painkillers safe for pregnancy?
For years, acetaminophen has been regarded as a safe painkiller during pregnancy. Acetaminophen is used in hundreds of over-the-counter medications, including popular cold, cough and flu medicines. Not surprisingly, around 65% of women in the United States report using it during pregnancy to treat a headache or an aching back.
Medicines that are safe during pregnancy
Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen is available over-the-counter and is typically safe to take during pregnancy, but see your doctor first. It is primarily used to treat headaches, fever, aches and pains, and sore throats.
However, other studies have found that there is a higher incidence of behavioral disorders in children. If you took a lot of paracetamol during pregnancy, your child could have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, or other problems.
NSAIDs
NSAIDs majorly include aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. Ibuprofen and naproxen are also available over-the-counter and carry a decreased risk of stomach issues and other side effects.
They are deemed safe for up to 20 weeks gestation. All NSAIDs must be avoided in the second half of pregnancy.
Aspirin
Aspirin is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless expressly prescribed by your doctor.
Aspirin may also be recommended to treat various medical conditions during pregnancy, such as preeclampsia.
Ibuprofen and naproxen
Ibuprofen and naproxen are commonly regarded as safer NSAIDs due to their lower risk of gastrointestinal problems and other adverse effects. However, both of these drugs must be used with caution during pregnancy.
What about menstrual pain?
There is no evidence that taking NSAIDs to relieve pain during the first few days of a menstrual period increases the chance of miscarriage that month.
Some treatment guidelines for period pain propose beginning NSAIDS the day before a period is due. This advice should not be followed by women who are a) trying to conceive or b) possibly pregnant.
What is safest for me to take?
If you are pregnant or attempting to conceive, visit a health practitioner before using NSAIDs, and consider alternate therapy. In most circumstances, paracetamol (Panadol) is regarded as a safe pain reliever.
